SPF vs PA Rating: What Indian Skin Actually Needs

Indian skin needs both a high SPF (50+) for UVB protection and a high PA rating (PA++++) for UVA protection — SPF alone is not enough. UVA penetrates clouds and glass, is present from sunrise to sunset year-round, and is a major driver of pigmentation and deep skin ageing. For Indian skin, which tends to be more reactive to inflammation-triggered pigmentation, UVA protection matters just as much as UVB protection.

UVA vs UVB — why both matter

UVB causes sunburn and surface DNA damage, peaking between 10am and 4pm. UVA penetrates clouds and glass, causes melanin activation, pigmentation and deeper skin ageing, and is present consistently from sunrise to sunset. India's UVA load stays high year-round, not just during obvious "sunny" hours — which is why PA rating deserves equal attention to SPF, especially for pigmentation-prone skin.

The white cast problem

Physical (mineral) sunscreens using titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have historically left a visible white cast on Indian skin tones (Fitzpatrick III–VI) — a major reason many people skip daily sunscreen altogether. Hybrid chemical-physical formulations, using micronised zinc oxide combined with chemical filters, eliminate the white cast while maintaining broad-spectrum protection.

Why reapplication is non-negotiable in India

SPF ratings are measured using a 2mg/cm² application — a thicker layer than most people actually apply (most use 25–50% of that amount). Combined with India's UV Index of 8–11, sweating and humidity, effective real-world protection requires reapplying every 2 hours outdoors, or every 3–4 hours indoors near windows.

For oily and acne-prone skin

Look for oil-free, silicone-free, non-comedogenic formulations. Avoid sunscreens with coconut oil, isopropyl myristate or heavy emollients, which can worsen breakouts and feel heavier in Indian humidity.
